The First Shard — Book One of The Shattered Glass Saga

The First Shard is dark fantasy with horror elements. The notes below are offered so you can make an informed choice about reading it. They are kept spoiler-light, but any content list reveals a little about what a story contains — if you prefer to go in completely cold, stop here.

Major themes & content (recurring or central)

• Graphic fantasy violence and peril — blade fights, magical combat, visceral injury detail.
• Body horror and involuntary bodily transformation — flesh turning to glass and crystal; spreading crystalline scarring; salt-crystal growth through living tissue.
• Drowning, near-drowning, and water peril throughout, including ritual drowning as a religious practice.
• Fire and burning trauma, including a mentor who nearly burns the protagonist to death and calls it "mercy."
• Reanimated and preserved corpses, and corpse imagery — salt-bound drowned dead, ossuary chambers, a corpse-monster.
• Cult and religious horror — a death-cult that drowns its faithful; coercive "mercy" and salvation rhetoric; loss of self through ritual.
• Child endangerment and ritual abuse of a child (backstory, non-sexual) — a young child groomed and repeatedly submerged as a religious "vessel"; drowned children; a child's off-page death. This content is religious and magical in nature, not sexual.
• Psychological horror around memory loss and the erosion of identity and self.
• Abduction and captivity of a loved one used as leverage; people spoken of and treated as "cargo."

Minor or brief

• Graphic medical and wound-care detail — a wound burned/cauterized out, bone-needle stitching, cutting crystal from injured children.
• Emotional and mentor abuse; manipulation and coercion.
• Magical dependency — a sentient object that keeps its bearer reliant on it.
• Alcohol use; a gambling establishment; tobacco.
• Grief, loss of home to arson, and displacement/refugees.
• Brief animal harm (fish gutted; a pet bird dead offscreen; a predatory creature).
• Mild profanity.

Romance & spice

Clean / no spice. There is no sexual content — no sex scenes, no closed-door or fade-to-black sex, no explicit references. Romance is a faint, unconsummated slow-burn undercurrent between two leads, plus one established, entirely off-page partnership referred to only obliquely.

Language

Mild. Occasional real profanity ("shit," "bastard," "hells"), used sparingly, alongside setting-specific invented oaths. No F-bombs, no slurs, no sexual crudeness.

Not present

Noted for readers who screen for these specifically:

• On-page sexual content.
• Sexual assault, or references to it.
• Self-harm and suicide or suicidal ideation.
• Drug use.
• Slurs.
• Sustained or gratuitous animal cruelty.
